Imatrankoski Rapids & Kruununpuisto Park – 58 km

The Imatrankoski Rapids canyon is the oldest tourist attraction in Finland.

As far back as 1772, the Russian Empress Catherine the Great was captivated by the immense power and scale of this natural wonder. The “Finnish Niagara” soon became a favorite getaway for the Russian elite.

In 1929, a hydroelectric power plant was built on the Vuoksi River. Today, the full beauty of the water-filled canyon can only be seen during scheduled rapid shows (water releases from the dam). In the summer, these shows are accompanied by music and special lighting. You can check the current schedule on the official website: https://kansallisihme.fi/en/imatrankoski-rapids

In 1842, by decree of Emperor Nicholas I, the area surrounding the waterfall was designated as Kruununpuisto (Crown Park). By the early 20th century, Imatra had become so popular that 14 trains arrived daily from St. Petersburg. It was one of Finland’s very first tourist destinations.
